Empire Deluxe: The Official Strategy Guide (Secrets of the Games)
Published in Paperback by Prima Publishing (August, 1993)
Authors: Alan Emrich and Mark Carroll
Average review score:

Still A great resource after all these years
This book is a definite must have for the true Empire Deluxe Fan. It does a fantastic job explaining how the different models work and has some wonderful tables on optimizing production.

It also gives various strategies and insights by the designers.

The "modem play" sections may be dated, but with Killer Bee Software's new release of Empire Deluxe, it still will prove quite helpful.

If this book is still out there, you want to buy it.

This book tells you everything you've been wondering
Having played Strategic Conquest on the MAC and the original Empire game, then later buying Empire Deluxe, I was thrilled to get a copy of this book through Amazon.com's used item web site.

This book takes you through the minds of the developers, you learn a bunch of tips and tricks. You learn to understand how the computer works and how to choose a map that will help the computer to be able to challenge you more.

I really enjoyed reading this book after having played Empire type games since 1984.

Four Came Home: The Gripping Story of the Survivors of Jimmy Doolittle's Two Lost Crews
Published in Paperback by Pictorial Histories Publishing Company (March, 1996)
Author: Carroll V. Glines
Average review score:

A Great Patriotic Read
This book is only about 170 pages long so I easily finished it in one day. Wow!!! What an incredible story! I have to admit I knew little about this raid but upon seeing "Pearl Harbor" felt I needed to investigate further. This book concisely covers every facet of the mission and quickly gets into the flight.

While it states what happened to all the crews, it clearly focuses on the 8 captured crewmen and what happened to them while in captivity. I've read one other account of POWs written by John McCain and I can't help but applaud the training and quality of these men in their ability to survive. If you've ever wondered exactly what water torture is, this book will explain it to you.

The second to last chapter covers the return of the last held in captivity, George Barr. Due to extremely poor health, he had to stay behind for some time prior to traveling. What this did to him mentally will leave you in tears and I encourage you to buy this book if only for this chapter.

This is a great book of heroism and should be read by any American. I strongly recommend this book.

You have so much because veterans of WWII gave so much!
I am honored to have met a major character in this incredible book, Lt. Col. Chase Jay Nielsen. He is one of the four who survived imprisonment and torture by the Japanese after successfully flying as a member of the Doolittle Raiders in April 1942. He spent 3 1/2 years of his young life under inhumane conditions, cruelty, and hopelessness which you would think would destroy a man for the rest of his life, if he were able to survive at all. Chase is an incredibly compassionate, strong, sweet man who holds no hatred for the Japanese people although he is haunted by sadness when remembering the execution of 2 of his best buddies. Carrol Glines does a phenomenal job recounting this historic mission as well as the personal stories of the Raiders who didn't come home until World War 2 was over. His description of the last hours for the 3 airmen who were executed made me cry out loud, it was so moving. We need to teach the children to be thankful for men like the Doolittle Raiders who, when spotted a day early by a Japanese boat, knew that they didn't have the fuel to land their planes safely but chose to carry out their surprise attack anyway. This is a story of true selflessness, sorrow, victory, hope, bitter pain, and faith. Thank you, Raiders, and all who fought in this war, thank you. KIM

Hidden Southern California
Published in Paperback by Ulysses Press (May, 1994)
Authors: Ray Riegert, Timothy Carroll, and Leslie Henriques
Average review score:

Good for the tourist or a new resident
This guide book covers all the bases, and even includes interesting historical digests of various districts in the Los Angeles area, the high desert and the low desert. The information is organized to assist tourists on short or longer visits, includes lots of "hidden" opportunities to eat, sightsee, or shop away from the beaten path, and is even helpful for a new resident to the L.A. area, who may not be sure where to start digesting this incredible city or the landscape around it. Highly recommended.

Excellent Guide to Southern California
This guide gave me all of the information I needed to have a wonderful vacation. The information was candid, and thoughtfully presented. There were many tidbits of information/ sights I would never had thought to see if it wasn't for this book. My vacation consisted of renting a car at LAX touring along the coast (stopping at places recommended in the guide) Heading down to San Diego and then returning to LAX by traveling inland and seeing Temecula etc. It was a fun filled 10 days and all I used was this guide. If you just want the basic tourist jargon, buy a Frommers guide, not a hidden one... :-)

How Artists See the Weather : Sun, Wind, Snow, Rain
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Press, Inc. (September, 1996)
Author: Colleen Carroll
Average review score:

Wonderful way for elementary age children to learn about art
I was delighted by the scope of artists and artistic styles discussed in the book. It is difficult to find books that teach art (history) in a meaninglful way to children. The explanation of techniques used as well as the biographies of the artists were helpful and interesting. My 8 year old daughter has expressed some interest in art and she enjoyed the book. Using the "everyday" element of weather makes it easier for children to relate to as well. I hope there will be more books like this one.

Visual beauty enriches science understanding.
This wonderful book enhances childrens' understanding of the science of weather and water. The color plates are vivid and the text is clear and thought provoking. The choice of artists is great, offering a variety of styles and periods.

The Job Zone is and invaluable gift and required reading...
The Job Zone is an invaluable gift and required reading particularly for every young Christian graduate who wants to ensure he or she is best prepared to successfully enter the fast changing, demanding business world at the head of the class. The Job Zone is an honest, concise, easy to read in one-sitting book which emphasizes, first, the importance of getting to know yourself before you can know what you want to do with your life. It then provides practical advice supported by rich and often humorous anecdotes from a seasoned human resources business executive on how to obtain, retain, enjoy and advance in the right job while successfully balancing life's many important priorities. This insightful book presents a unique approach to this subject and should be read with a highlighter for refocus on the many meaningful points each reader will find important to themselves. I found much to highlight even after forty years as a business executive.

An absolute winner for serious job hunters and corp. execs.
This book is packed with great tips, quotes, humor and stories about finding a great job and transforming the culture of corporations. The author's life stories and strong Christian beliefs make this book a compelling case for achieving success in corporate America. It's a refreshing approach, especially as we approach the millenium.

Beautiful book!
This is a gorgeous book of paintings by a master artist. I recommend it.

Finest book on contemporary Charleston and art in print.
I purchased my copy of this beautiful coffee-table book from John Carroll Doyle's art gallery in Charleston. The book showcases his art, but at the same time focuses on the history of Charleston through the eyes of someone who grew up there in the 1950's-present. If you are interested in exquisite art and Charleston history, by all means, this is the book for you.
